Utility Savings – How to Save on Fuel Bills
There are plenty of ways that we can cut back on the fuel we use, both for ecological and economical reasons. In the current economic crisis many people are looking for ways to save money, and a prime contender for making cuts and spending less is fuel.
The Atmosphere
Western governments are constantly reminding populations that for the sake of our children and our children’s children, we need to cut down on the amount of fossil fuels we are using. Apart from the cost, the large amount of fuel that the west consumes places a strain on natural resources, as well as contributing to the destruction of our planet. If we change the way we use our cars and the way we heat our homes, then we could save a considerable amount of money.
Solar panels and wind farms are alternative ways of heating homes and buildings and providing all kinds of power. While opinion is still divided as to how cost effective solar power might be, and where wind farms should be situated, there are still an increasing number of homes that use some form of solar power, and a growing number of wind farms scattered around the UK landscape. Those people who have benefited from wind and solar power certainly find the wind power more economical. What prevents solar power from being as economical as wind power is the high cost of installing solar panels in individual homes.
Yet another aspect of fuel use that we need to change is how we power our cars. At present scientists and engineers spend a lot of time searching for eco friendly, alternative and replenishable sources of fuel. In both America, and more recently in the UK, there has been a move towards using hybrid vehicles i.e. those vehicles that use both fuel and water to keep them running.
Saving Money
There are a number of ways that individuals can save money on their utility bills. Longer life electric bulbs are much cheaper to run than ordinary light bulbs as they use less power, they also last a lot longer than the older type of electric light bulbs. Turn your central heating down to background level and have a fire of some description in the most used room of your home. You shouldn’t leave things like televisions, computers and music systems on standby, apart from the fact that this is a fire risk, contrary to popular belief, standby does use electricity.
When you are cooking food, either with gas or electricity, cook twice the amount of something and freeze half. When you do this you simply freeze the extra meal once it has cooled down, and then take it out and microwave when you need it.
All of these things will save some money on your utility bills. Another way to save on utility bills is to go to one of the internet comparison sites and compare the estimated costs that are attributed to different utility providers. If you change your provider you could save yourself a substantial amount of money over the course of a year.
